The trick: ten times, minus one

9 × n = 10 × n − n: 9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63. Up to 9 × 10 the tens digit is one less than n and the digits add to 9 — the finger trick works for the same reason.

Patterns in the 9s

The last digits from 9 × 1 to 9 × 10 run 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0: every digit from 0 to 9 appears exactly once, so no two answers in the first ten share an ending.

The 9 times table is the 5 times table plus the 4 times table, row by row: 9 × 6 = 5 × 6 + 4 × 6 = 30 + 24 = 54.

Each answer is 9 more than the one before, so if you know 9 × 6 = 54, then 9 × 7 is 54 + 9 = 63.
