The trick: five times plus one more

6 × n is 5 × n plus n: 6 × 7 = 35 + 7 = 42. For even numbers there's a shortcut: 6 × 4 = 24, 6 × 6 = 36, 6 × 8 = 48 — the answer ends in the number you multiplied by.

Patterns in the 6s

The last digits repeat a short cycle — 6, 2, 8, 4, 0, 6, 2, 8, 4, 0 — so every answer ends in one of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.

The 6 times table is the 5 times table plus the 1 times table, row by row: 6 × 6 = 5 × 6 + 1 × 6 = 30 + 6 = 36.

Each answer is 6 more than the one before, so if you know 6 × 6 = 36, then 6 × 7 is 36 + 6 = 42.
