The trick: twenty times, minus three times

17 × n = 20 × n − 3 × n: 17 × 6 = 120 − 18 = 102. Or 10 × n + 7 × n if you prefer adding.

Patterns in the 17s

The last digits from 17 × 1 to 17 × 10 run 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0: every digit from 0 to 9 appears exactly once, so no two answers in the first ten share an ending.

The 17 times table is the 10 times table plus the 7 times table, row by row: 17 × 6 = 10 × 6 + 7 × 6 = 60 + 42 = 102.

Each answer is 17 more than the one before, so if you know 17 × 6 = 102, then 17 × 7 is 102 + 17 = 119.
