The trick: five plus two

7 × n is 5 × n plus 2 × n: 7 × 8 = 40 + 16 = 56. The 7 times table has no neat pattern, so this split is the reliable fallback. Remember 56 = 7 × 8 as “5, 6, 7, 8”.

Patterns in the 7s

The last digits from 7 × 1 to 7 × 10 run 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0: every digit from 0 to 9 appears exactly once, so no two answers in the first ten share an ending.

The 7 times table is the 5 times table plus the 2 times table, row by row: 7 × 6 = 5 × 6 + 2 × 6 = 30 + 12 = 42.

Each answer is 7 more than the one before, so if you know 7 × 6 = 42, then 7 × 7 is 42 + 7 = 49.
