The trick: twenty times, minus two times

18 × n = 20 × n − 2 × n: 18 × 7 = 140 − 14 = 126. It's also double the 9s, so the digits of every answer up to 18 × 10 add to 9.

Patterns in the 18s

The last digits repeat a short cycle — 8, 6, 4, 2, 0, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 — so every answer ends in one of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.

The 18 times table is the 10 times table plus the 8 times table, row by row: 18 × 6 = 10 × 6 + 8 × 6 = 60 + 48 = 108.

Each answer is 18 more than the one before, so if you know 18 × 6 = 108, then 18 × 7 is 108 + 18 = 126.
