The test

LevelFactorsExample
Easy2–12 × 2–127 × 8
Medium2–99 × 2–997 × 86
Hard11–99 × 11–9997 × 94

Type each product and press Enter. You get problems per minute, accuracy, and a bar per problem showing exactly which ones cost you time. Start on Easy if you're not sure of your tables — there's a dedicated times tables practice guide.

One digit × two digits

Split the two-digit number, multiply left to right, add.

7 × 86 = 7 × 80 + 7 × 6 = 560 + 42 = 602

This is the single most useful skill for the Medium level — and the building block for the Hard one.

Two digits × two digits

Split one factor into tens and units, or round one factor and correct. Both are covered step by step in how to multiply two-digit numbers in your head.

Both numbers just under 100

Find how far each is below 100. Subtract one distance from the other number for the first two digits; multiply the distances for the last two.

97 × 94 (distances 3 and 6) 94 − 3 = 91, 3 × 6 = 18 → 9,118 98 × 97 (distances 2 and 3) 97 − 2 = 95, 2 × 3 = 06 → 9,506

Write the product of the distances as two digits — 6 becomes 06.

Special cases worth knowing

× 11, × 9, × 5, × 25 and squares all have shortcuts that turn them into one step. They're in mental math tricks and how to square numbers in your head.
