Division speed test

Every problem divides exactly, so the test measures one thing: how quickly you can find the missing factor.

There are no remainders and no decimals. Run against the clock or over a fixed count, and get your problems per minute and accuracy.

Think in multiplication

56 ÷ 7 is the question "7 times what is 56?" If your times tables are instant, Easy division is too. If they're not, practise the tables first — it's the quickest route to faster division.

Split the number being divided

Break it into parts that each divide cleanly, then add the answers.

378 ÷ 7 = 350 ÷ 7 + 28 ÷ 7 = 50 + 4 = 54

Halve repeatedly for 2, 4 and 8

936 ÷ 8 → 468 → 234 → 117

Divide by 5 by doubling

Dividing by 5 is the same as doubling and dividing by 10.

435 ÷ 5 = 870 ÷ 10 = 87

Break up the divisor

For a divisor like 12, 15 or 24, divide in two steps: 4,812 ÷ 12 is ÷ 4 then ÷ 3, which gives 401. Divisibility rules tell you which steps are available.
