Arcade: mental math games

The Arcade is a collection of 42 free mental math games that run in your browser with no signup: timed sprints, falling-number shooters, logic puzzles and classics like Sudoku and 2048, each keeping its own best score on your device.

Every game is built on the same problem generators as the timed drills, so the arithmetic is real practice rather than decoration. What changes is what you do with it. Some games ask you to type, some only to tap, and a few need nothing but a good eye.

How it works

Nine shelves. Action games where the numbers move (Rainfall, Blaster, Number Snake, Math Racer, Dungeon Run); speed games against the clock (Survival, Chain, Flash Sum, Prime Time, Missing Number); puzzles to work out at your own pace (Target, Make Ten, Big Target, Cages, Math Golf); classic puzzles with numbers (Sudoku, Mines, 2048, Code Breaker, Equation Hunt); number sense (Higher or Lower, Bullseye, Number Line); brain training (Digit Span, Angle Ace); everyday math (Time Check, Change Maker, Percent Shop, Unit Rush); games for younger players with big buttons and no game over (Balloon Pop, Dot Count, Number Pyramid); and battles and boards (Boss raid, Bingo, Face-Off, Math Factory, Ghost race).

Your best, per game. Each game keeps its own best score and play count, and games with more than one version (Target's timed and daily, Sudoku's easy to hard) keep one per version. Finish a round and the result card says whether it was a new best. Scores live in your browser; sign in if you want them to follow you between devices and to appear on a game's leaderboard.

Daily puzzles. Target, Cages, Sudoku, Code Breaker and Equation Hunt each have a daily version: one puzzle, the same for everyone, new at 00:00 UTC. Today gathers them with the Daily Challenge. Boss raid runs on a weekly clock instead, and Ghost race replays your own best run from Math mode as an opponent.

A worked example

Chain is the quickest to explain. It starts you on a small number, say 8, and every link is one operation on the running total. Plus 15: type 23. Times 3: type 69. Minus 29: type 40. Divide by 5: type 8. Division only ever appears where it comes out even, so there is nothing to round. A wrong answer breaks the chain, and your score is the longest chain you built in 60 seconds. The same arithmetic in Rainfall has the problems falling towards the ground while you type, and in Higher or Lower you never type at all: two expressions, tap the bigger one.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Arcade games free, and do I need an account?

All of them are free, with no ads and no paywall, and none needs an account. Best scores are saved in your browser. Signing in is optional and keeps them across devices.

Which games work well on a phone?

All of them run on a phone in the browser, and the ones that need no typing play best with a thumb: Higher or Lower, Sort It, Number Line, Make Ten, 2048, Sudoku, Mines, Fact Grid, Balloon Pop and Face-Off, a two-player game on one screen.

Is there a daily puzzle?

Five of them: Target, Cages, Sudoku, Code Breaker and Equation Hunt each publish one puzzle a day that every player gets, alongside the 20-problem Daily Challenge. They all reset at midnight UTC.

Are these games suitable for kids?

The shelf for younger players is built for them: Balloon Pop starts with counting and has no game over, Dot Count trains seeing a quantity without counting, and Number Pyramid is an addition puzzle. Fact Grid is a one-minute times tables and number bonds game for anyone learning them.
